Today
is a good day to reflect on how communication has changed in recent
decades. The Internet & Internet Security has
changed our way of relating, of informing ourselves and, ultimately, of understanding
reality. We have learned words, shortened distances, created tools,
developed skills, modified concepts and ideas… a whole new world!
But
it is still too early to predict the effects and social changes that
all this will cause. It is understandable then the fears of many parents
before an environment that we still do not know in its entirety, and whose
consequences are unpredictable for the moment.
However,
living with your back to reality is impossible. And the attraction of
children and adolescents to technology, undeniable. They know how to
handle computers and mobiles almost innately, but they still have to learn
to use them responsibly; a task in the hands of fathers, mothers and teachers. Let's
see an example from the CEAC blog of how easy it can be for them to access
our private information.
Not
sure how to handle the situation? We propose methods to teach you how to use
the Internet safely and enhance its advantages, which are many. The
aim is to minimize the risks by explaining them and making them aware of them,
always trying to go beyond the control and the unjustified prohibition.
10 tips to surf the net safely
We
must start by remembering often that their actions on the Internet also have
consequences, something they must always bear in mind. Then, to make it
easier, we can summarize the most important indications in 10 tips:
1. Do not give personal data, neither
yours nor that of any family member or friend. Share only photos or videos that
you don't mind being seen by other people, and never tag anyone without their
permission.
2. Keep your passwords secret. It is important to use a safe
combination and change it from time to time.
3. Reject spam and unexpected files. Also, skip on mysterious offers
and gifts. Ignore bargains and strange proposals, first talk and consult
with your family.
4. Use more than one e-mail address. In this way, you can have a
personal address and another for registrations on websites, contests ...
5. Someone unknown is not a friend. No matter how long you've been
talking, don't trust the people you meet on the Internet, they are often not
who they say they are. Also, does not date for the first time with someone
alone, always be accompanied by an adult.
6. Not giving your e-mail easily. Also, do not provide addresses
of friends or family without their permission.
7. On social media, accept only
friend requests from people you know. You
already know that you shouldn't talk to strangers on the street, why would it
be any different on the Internet?
8. Avoid pages that ask for money and
those that have violent, obscene or discriminatory content.
9. Use a good antivirus and firewall. It will prevent you from future
troubles.
10.If they bother you, ask for help. If you are subjected to foul
language, unpleasant submissions or any type of harassment that makes you
uncomfortable; share it with an adult. Trust your father and mother
and, if someone tells you otherwise, don't trust them.
It
can be useful, for example, to write or print the 10 points on a sheet and hang
it near the computer, so that you never lose sight of them. Or watch
an educational video together on responsible use of the Internet
and its possible dangers.
In
addition, on the website of the Friendly Screens initiative, you will
find more information and links with the aim of promoting responsible digital
citizenship in childhood and adolescence. In it they provide an
interesting manual of educational resources; which includes books,
games, practical guides.
